ACTING Education Minister James Marape last Friday handed over the education portfolio to Nick Kuman in a  ceremony at the PNG Education Institute.

Marape told Kuman: “Your appointment will leapfrog you from 2014 onwards shaped by the recent government’s summit commitments as priorities to be implemented by the ministry and department.

“PNG’s future will be determined by a solid education system.

“It will depend on your leadership to provide intervention informed by strong government political will and leadership and resources that are provided to enable change.”

Marape said realistic strategies must ensure that:

  • Elementary and primary schools are established in each ward and district;
  • secondary schools are established in each district;
  • vocational schools are established in each district;
  • community colleges to replace the  vocational centres;
  • one technical and business college in each province; and,
  • One national polytechnic in each region providing links to university education.

Marape urged Kuman to see that children who entered school at elementary level must continue to Grade 12.

“The aim will be to complete a full cycle of school education, meaning every Papua New Guinean will have attained grade 12 school education.”
