THE BASILISK naval base is to be relocated so that land can be redeveloped for tourism, says Defence Force chief Major-General Mark Goina.
Goina said the land along Fairfax Harbour where the naval base was located, plus PNG Ports, would be redeveloped.
“Kumul Consolidated Holdings (KCH) owns that area and is trying to develop it for tourism,” he explained.
“They will be building infrastructure like those along harbours in other countries – a business centre or a hotel.”
He did not know the exact plans for the area were, but that KCH was going to redevelop it once the current occupants move out.
He said that Basilisk’s base would be moved to the other side of Fairfax Harbour.
They are still in talks with landowners but found Roku to be more ideal than one of their earlier options. The Lands Department in Central has been helping them with the acquisition of the land for the new naval base.
Goina said there were other units that they were in talks with to relocate, including the Long Range Reconnaissance Unit at the Goldie River Training Depot.
