TELIKOM Foundation will install “clean” broadband Internet for Telefomin High School and primary school in West Sepik.

Chief executive officer Brian Sam said it would be “clean internet” because they would deny access to websites such as Facebook, Twitter, pornography and only sites that promote knowledge, such as Wikipedia and useful search engines would be accessed.

Sam said these filters had proven successful in 20 schools around the country, serving about 18,000 school children.

He said Sogeri National High School and Kilakila Secondary School in Port Moresby were among the 20 schools.

And this time, it is going rural to Telefomin with a funding of K150,000 from the Telefomin district administration.

“We are doing that aggressively with the reduction in internet costs so take the risk and be with us,” Sam said.

Telefomin MP Solan Mirisim last Thursday made the payment to Telikom PNG chief executive Charles Litau at Telikom Rumana in Port Moresby.

Telikom Foundation would build the computer network and install the internet which should allow a download speed at four gigabyte through Vsat broadband.

There would be 20 computers set up for the high school and five for the primary school.

“When I pay for school fees, I need to put infrastructure like building and curriculum materials in place,” Mirisim said.

He said the funding was from the total K1.2 million his administration had budgeted for education.

Mirisim said teachers there could log onto credible internet sites and source information to plan their lessons and teach students.

Mirisim also presented tertiary subsidy monies from his district administration to the International Training Institute (K9,000) and Don Bosco Technical Institute (K10,500).

He said each college student from his electorate would benefit from a K1,500 subsidised tertiary fees for the next five years.
