AN Eastern Highlands man was described as a “conman” by a magistrate in Lae, Morobe last Friday.

Acting National Court judge Martin Ipang told Jimmy Auko, from Okapa district, that he was a conman because he had lied to another person and got his money.

Auko appeared before the court on a charge of obtaining money by false pretence.

The court heard that in June, last year, the accused sold a piece of land at Boundary Road in Lae, Morobe, to a Junior Keith and got K1,000.

Keith had deposited the money with the accused and told him that he would pay the balance at a later date.

The court heard that the father-of-three later sold the same piece of land to another man and got some money before escaping to his village.

Auko told the court that he had waited for a long time for the complainant to pay the balance.

He told the court that he got frustrated and sold the land to another buyer.

Ipang fined Auko K200 and sentenced him to four months in prison. He was also ordered to repay the K1,000 or face extra penalties.
