TWELVE men have been arrested over the weekend after the death of a man at Kela village, Salamaua in Morobe’s Huon Gulf, a senior police officer says.
Morobe police commander Supt Jacob Singura said the men were arrested after one of them slashed another young man in the neck resulting in his death on Saturday.
“The killing was not election-related as the man after paying a visit to a lady, tried to take off when he was spotted by the lady’s relatives,” he said.
“He was chased and chopped on the neck resulting in his death.”
Singura said the way the young man was killed was barbaric as there was no respect for life.
Police in Morobe are now investigating the incident.
In another rape-murder incident, a woman was raped and then killed over the weekend at Morobe Patrol Post.
According to Singura, police had received reports of the alleged rape and murder incident on Friday.
“We are sending a team of investigators to Morobe Patrol Post to investigate the incident.”
Singura said both killings would be investigated thoroughly and the killers brought to justice.
He said it was sad and unfortunate that people had lost their lives violently and in the same district and urged people to respect one another and look out for each other.
He added that disputes and other issues of contention in the community needed to be addressed peacefully.
