’19 challenging: Official

Business

THE Lae Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) president John Byrne says last year was a challenging year for many businesses in Morobe.
Commenting on the performance of businesses, Byrne said for importers, the lack of foreign exchange caused major challenges and this was evident in the short supply of many goods and products on shelves and in businesses.
He said the competitive element of business provided some innovation and many businesses adjusted themselves, yet there remained an uneven playing field across the businesses which the government must address.
“2020 looks to be a very similar year,” he said.
“Lae and Morobe have been holding our breath for a positive announcement on Wafi-Golpu project which would bring a level of investor or business confidence.
“But unfortunately there has been little progress on this much needed project.
“The security and safety of Lae city has continued to improve under acting Met Supt Chief Insp Chris Kunyanban’s leadership, which is great for the people and businesses of Lae.”
When asked about the small and medium enterprises (SME) programmes being supported and announced by Government, Byrne said the idea was supported by LCCI. “This will be achieved with the right processes in place, structure and level playing field,” he said.
“This includes reducing the illegal traders and supporting proper SME’s who operate under a proper framework of tax and rates.
“LCCI intends to continue to promote Lae as the commercial and investor hub of PNG, and plans are underway to determine an Investment conference in Lae around mid-year.”
