TWENTY students received certificates in safety of life at sea after taking part in a week course organised by Youths with a Mission (Ywam) last week.
The course followed a partnership with Ywam aimed at increasing maritime training in the country.
The course was conducted aboard the Ywam training and medical ship during its deployment to rural communities in Western and Port Moresby.
Pacific Maritime Training College (PMTC) president Gabriel Magyari said the training was a great opportunity for the students.
“This training will enhance their skills from the classroom to hands-on application, especially on an operational vessel,” he said.
Magyari said combining learning with mission would add to students’ knowledge and experience.
“The course will not only qualify the students but would also boost the maritime industry and would be an awareness for rural communities,” he said.
The participants comprised 13 PMTC students and seven Ywam medical ship crew members.
Ship captain Jeremy Schiere said the training had benefited both PMTC and Ywam.
“Tuition fee for our crew members for this course was donated by PMTC,” he said.
Schiere said the training would enable their crew to further up-skill and equip them as seafarers to serve throughout the country.
He said the outcome of the training would enable the crew to provide quality training as they continued to serve people in remote PNG.
Participants of the course would become members of the MV Ywam PNG deck and engineering crew.
The course certificates would give them the opportunity to gain practical experience and to help those in isolated communities in need of healthcare.
