POLICE have arrested three men along the Hiritano Highway in Gulf for marijuana possession and trafficking on Wednesday, commander Chief Inspector Jeffrey Lemb says.
“The trio, from Eastern Highlands, have been charged and are being held in the Kerema police station lockup,” he said. “This is the third such arrest involving marijuana since I took command recently.
“I believe this is an ongoing crime, with youths from Eastern Highlands smuggling marijuana to Port Moresby through Gulf,” he said.
On the current General Election 2022 (GE22) situation, Lemb said there had been no major election-related incident in the province.
“However, I have written to the chairman of the Gulf executive council and Governor Christopher Haiveta to seriously consider imposing an immediate partial liquor ban.
“I have recommended that all store outlets, including clubs and takeaway shops, be closed until after the return of election writs,” he said.
“Hotels and resorts will be allowed to serve liquor to their guests in their premises only.”
National Capital District and Central assistant commissioner Anthony Wagambie said there were no election-related violence in NCD during the nomination period.
