A 48-YEAR-OLD man has been committed to stand trial in the National Court on one count of false pretence and one count of misappropriation of property.
Magistrate Paul Nii, yesterday, committed Rodney Togumagoma of Kiriwina Island, Milne Bay and said there was sufficient evidence to commit him to trial for alleged offences committed in 2020.
The property belonged to a Tony Waisi. Magistrate Nii said Togumagoma’s submission on evidence and WhatsApp messages were enough to draw a conclusion that there was an intent to defraud as he had obtained K70,000 from the complainant.
Police alleged that Togumagoma was given K70,000 by Waisi to buy gold in Milne Bay.
Waisi deposited the money into certain accounts nominated by Togumagoma. Police further alleged that Waisi was subsequently promised by Togumagoma that when he sold the gold and received K94,600, it would be given to the complainant when he arrived in Port Moresby.
However, when Togumagoma arrived in Port Moresby Waisi discovered that he had not brought the money and was arrested and charged.
