IT is yet to be made known whether women will join the Kumul Petroleum Papua New Guinea Rugby Union Super Sevens Series following a decision to end the tournament a week early.
Provincial women’s teams were scheduled to join the series in round three of the inaugural tournament this weekend.
But with the decision to end the series this weekend, organisers said yesterday that they were yet to decide whether women will compete in the tournament this year.
Tournament director Paul Joseph said more than 10 provincial unions across the four regions had registered their teams.
“In the New Guinea Islands, we have Manus, Bougainville, East New Britain and West New Britain,” he said.
“Sepik and Morobe for Mamose
“For the Highlands, we have Goroka and Mt Hagen.
“In Southern, we have National Capital District Rugby Union, Capital Rugby Uion and Central.”
Joseph said it was crucial to have women compete in the tournament to promote gender equality.
“They have a chance to qualify for the Olympics and other international Games,” he said.
“Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, we haven’t been taking part in international events.”
