THE University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) will host a rugby sevenscompetition this weekend at the vice chancellor’s oval at the main campus.
The universities different faculties or schools will be vying for Cup and prize money of K5,000.
The school of origin was initiated by students Philip Naru and Devan Kula at UPNG last year during the semester break with help from the late Margaret Tapo from the  student administrative recreational office .
“The purpose of this competition is to bring along unity to the students through sports and to socialise with each other,” Naru said.
This initiative also extends to the university community and other institutions which were invited for the sevens comp.
These include Port Moresby Business College, Technical and Further Education Agency (TAFE), and Don Bosco Technical College.
Naru said, there would be a selection for sevens competition which would participate in the Port Moresby rookie sevens competition at the end of the year.
Naru is also planning to send a team to Bougainville for a tournament during the Christmas period.
Last year, a UPNG sevens side participated at the Indian Rim Asian University games which was held at the University of Western Australia in Perth.
“UPNG was awarded the most improved team in the elimination finals out of 12 teams that participated,” Naru said.
One of the products of the school of origin sevens is the  current Prime Minister’s XIII and  Port Moresby Vipers winger Elijah Riyong, who played under the school of business administration  and  also represented the PNG sevens side  at a tournament in Sri Lanka  last year.
Naru said the teams, who are participating in the tournament, are the school of humanities  and social science (SHSS), school of law, school of natural and physical science (SNPS), school of medicine and school of business administration and a team from each of the other invited institutions.
Naru said that the games would provide an feast of rugby sevens entertainment  with try-scoring machine Lemeki Ken who will lead the SNPS and Kone Asingu for the SHSS in the opening matches.
The other games will see Elly Dire lead the business school side while Tyson Yapao takes the reins for the Law faculty team.
