POM women masters receive K5,000 boost for Gold Coast games

THE newly established Port Moresby Women’s Basketball League yesterday sealed its participation at the Pan-Pacific Masters games in Gold Coast, Australia, through a timely sponsorship from Concept Software.
Concept gave the women K5,000 along with uniforms and spending money for the senior team.
Ten players along with officials and supporters would leave for the masters event scheduled for Nov 6-14.
Former Papua New Guinean female basketball stars will compete in the 40-plus-years category.
“This is seen as a start for this group of former basketball players whom between us have represented the country or played competitively to get the ball rolling for the activities of the POMWBL,” Pondros said.
Concept Software managing director Brendan Coombs said the company was more than willing to get behind
the women’s team.
He was glad that the company had backed the basketballers to involve seniors to be active and keeping fit.
Concept has been involved with women’s sport before with assistance to soccer and basketball.
President of POMWBL Emma Waiwai, when thanking the company, said the sponsorship was a step forward for them to reach out to women and girls through basketball.
The gala opening night for the competition would be held at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Queensland events Gold Coast general manager Cameron Hart said: “The Pan Pacific masters games are for anyone over 30 who play a sport on the programme.
“It does not need to be at a high level – it can be just for fun. That is what makes the Pan Pacific special – that combination of competitive sport with the social and fun element of playing.”
