Junior tennis star Tere-Apisah back in PNG

PAPUA New Guinea teenage tennis star Abigail Tere-Apisah is back in the country ahead of a heavy upcoming schedule in junior tennis around the world.
The young ace arrived in Port Moresby on Tuesday to complete the necessary visa documentation for travel in the months ahead, and to be with her family before her hectic schedule begins.
An elated and thankful mother, Vere, however told The National that her daughter’s travel arrangements could not have been possible without the help and support of family, friends and business houses.
“The family, thank first and foremost, George Leahy and Oilmin company for covering Abigail’s travel expenses for a return flight from Sydney to Port Moresby.
“Oilmin has come to our aid at a very crucial time and we thank them from the bottom of our hearts,” Vere said.
She also extended the family’s appreciation and gratitude to coach Phil Shanahan and the Albury community in Melbourne, who have become Abigail’s family in Australia.
Abigail has a busy schedule lined up with the International Tennis Federations B1 championships in South Korea, and the Eddie Herr International Championship and Junior Orange Bowl Titles in the United States.
Abigail will also participate at the South Korea event alongside Pacific team-mate Steffi Carruthers of Samoa.
Mum Vere and coach Shanahan have set goals for the tournaments which Abgail will be participating in while making crucial time for  her education.
“We have worked around my school and tennis schedule, and I will be alright in the period we have,” Abigail said about  juggling between school and tennis.
“Right now, I want to play in as many quality tournaments as I can, and increase my world ranking.
“This will enable me to play in the grand slams in the US and Europe and around the world.
“That is my ultimate goal,” Abigail said.
