Rebels’ Genevieve Ume, is a young defender with great skills which have helped her team reach the Port Moresby Netball Association premier division grand final.
The 19-year-old from Gulf and Central is doing Grade 12 at Tokarara Secondary School.
She plays goal defence, goal keeper and wing defender.
“I joined the Rebels last year and I had come to know Genevieve as a humble, disciplined and committed young woman,” coach Oti Lasagavibau.
“Genevieve’s performance had improved tremendously in her skill level this season and I know she has a good future in netball.
“She is a quick learner and applies what she learns in matches, and I believe this had really improved her game.
“Genevieve is one of the top young players in the team.
“She is a good defender with a lot of potential.
“With her leadership, she was appointed captain of the Rebels U21 team this season.
“She leads by example and I am proud of her achievements in helping the U21 team make the grand final.”
“I believe Genevieve has a long way to go in netball, so she will continue to improve.”
Ume represented PNG in the U21 and senior women’s teams at the Mini Pacific Games in Vanuatu 2017.
Though Ume was selected in the Pepes squad for the Oceania qualifiers in New Zealand this year, she had to withdraw due to her studies.
Lasagavibau commended her for making that choice.
“And she made the right decision at the young age by showing her commitment in education as a top priority,” Lasagavibau said.
Ume is the youngest in a family of six.
She developed the interest to play netball when she was eight years old.
