Show makes comeback after 30 years

Madang‘s famous Maborasa Show has made a comeback after 30 years and hundreds witnessed the province’s various traditional singsing.
The town’s Laiwaden Oval was packed from Friday to Monday for the show.
Singsing groups from the six districts in the province attended and showcased their traditional dances, while string bands entertained the crowds on Saturday night.
Governor Peter Yama, public servants, members of the Chamber of Commerce, international friends of Madang – including Indians, Chinese and Filipinos – enjoyed the show. He said after independence in 1975, the first Madang House of Assembly was formed. There were only four districts in the province. They were Madang, Bogia, Ramu and Saidor, now Raicoast.
Yama said Sumkar used to be under Madang and Usino-Bundi was under Ramu. “So the name Maborasa was derived from the first two letters of the four districts at that time, Ma for Madang, Bo for Bogia, Ra for Ramu and Sa for Saidor,” he said.
Madang has more than 180 languages.
