NATIONAL Capital District Governor Powes Parkop wants to have an affordable, reliable and efficient public transport system in Port Moresby.
He told The National that for the city to be prosperous, it should have this service so that people arrived on time for work, went home safely on time and school children were at school on time.
“I thank the PMV bus services,” Parkop said.
“They have served the people of this city in the past up to now, but they are not efficient, not reliable.
“We will be having a dialogue with the PMV Association.
“We are not going to put them out of business but we should come up with some win-win decisions where they run some routes and the new public buses run some routes.”
Parkop said new buses donated for Asia-Pacific Economic Conference would be given to National Capital District Commission after the meeting.
He said it would help the National Capital District Commission roll out an affordable, reliable and efficient public transport system.
Parkop also praised road conditions in the city, which had recently been elevated to a higher standard. “Some of the road are world-class,” he said.
“The roads may not be like the eight or six-lanes in big cities around the world, but our four-lane roads in terms of quality are just as good.”
President of PMV Association Jack Waso said operators had been providing a service to the people of Port Moresby for the last 40 years.
“We urged our good governor to come up with a good plan before rolling out the public transport system in the city,” Waso said.
