Maru and the NID project

Letters

Minister for National Planning and Monitoring Richard Maru is a man of great distinction, having also excelled in the private sector where he was managing director of the National Development Bank (NDB) and, at the same time, chairman of many boards.
While at NDB he was directly responsible for the setting up of a K5 million online banking information and communications (ICT) system.
He is not new to the ICT field and can make his own decisions based on the advice given to him.
In relation to the NID Project, a paid advertisement in both dailies will be coming out next week to cover the current status and the work being done to facilitate and improve things.
The customised NID technology platform is very expensive and difficult to maintain, and is limited only to electronic identification.
In its current form it will not accommodate any proposed electronic governance and electronic government systems.
Modifying it will be extremely expensive.
Hopefully the advertisement will allow members of the public to judge for themselves how the NID project is going.
The NID information that will stored on the PNGCIR database is our information bank and treasure.
It will help us plan for our future.
