Fix dormitories

Letters

I am a concerned parent, writing to add my view regarding an article published in The National on Feb 5 about first-year students at the University of PNG main campus moving to the Games Village to make way for renovation to the DMK building (dorm).
Something similar should also be done to UPNG Taurama campus students (especially females) and the deteriorating dormitories should be attended.
The dorms look okay from the outside but many rooms, if not all, need urgent repair.
A student must be accommodated in a room and building that is fit for a human being to live in. The rooms and buildings should also reflect that of a higher learning institution in the country.
Responsible authorities (Health and Building Inspectors) should physically check for themselves whether the dorms are ok.
The doors, locks, windows and fly wires, termite-infested beds and cupboards, need to be repaired quickly.
Many student dorms at the main campus too are in need of repair – it just does not look good for the highest learning institute in the country.
The 2019 academic year has already started so I hope the responsible authorities do something.
It is also said that this year female students at Taurama campus would be moved to the back the campus and male students to the front.
Whatever the reasons, please consider safety.

Concerned (Megusa) parent.
