Water PNG prepares more than 2900 demand letters for debtors

WATER PNG Ltd’s legal recovery team has prepared 2941 demand letters from debtors in Lae and Madang, an official says.
For Lae, which will have 2500 of the letters, 531 of them were already issued since March.
Manager customer success (Lae) and a member of the legal recovery team Herman Kagl said of the 531 demand letters issued, 65 default summons were filed through Lae District Court and would be issued to defaulters to face court to sort out their case.
“Another 300 default summons for civil debt will be filed in the coming weeks and will be sued before the court,” he said
“Lae also has 18 defaulters with debts of more than K10,000 and were issued their court orders. Come September, a total of 2,500 debtors will face court.”
Kagl said for Madang, the legal recovery team had 441 demand letters and 114 were issued this week and others would be issued soon.
“The summons will be filed through Madang District Court and will be issued to the defaulters to face court to plead their cases,” he said.
Kagl explained that water theft was classified as criminal.
He said if people were tampering with water lines and stealing revenue water, they would be given 14 days from today to own up, pay the outstanding
amount and advise Water PNG Ltd officers to do proper connections.
Customers nationwide owed Water PNG a total of K50 million.
