Production slow at cement factory
The National, Tuesday 22nd November 2011
PNG Taiheiyo Cement, the sole cement producer, has still not resumed full production since the mass sacking of 130 employees three weeks ago.
Only a handful of workers went back to work yesterday but they were unlikely to make a difference in production output as the plant was not fully operational.
The sacked workers are represented by trade union consultant Tom Vevo, who is in Port Moresby organising a restraining order to stop the company from taking on new employees until it justified the mass sacking.
Vevo said he would no-
tify the company to accept the sacked workers back without any loss of entitlements and salaries.
Vevo said the company remained firm on its decision to sack the workers.
He reported that the Department of Labour and Industrial Relations was concerned about this case and planned to intervene.
