TOURISM in the Huon Gulf district of Morobe is being seriously considered as a means of generating income for villagers, the electorate and the province.
In signing a contract to develop tourism in the district yesterday, manager of Culture Link, a local consortium that operates along the Morobe coast, Maine Winny, said Huon was a pioneer in the work of community-based eco-tourism for more than 15 years.
The contract was signed under its district services improvement programme (DSIP) for funding of K400,000.
Winny said the commitment by the Huon district now “makes the district a leader in eco-tourism development in the province and the country”.
He said over the years, groups such as Village Development Trust (VDT), Morobe Tourism Bureau, Bris Kanda and Tourism Promotion Authority helped establish tourism activities in the district and contributed to marketing and promotion overseas.
