OLSH nuns mark 125 years

ST Joseph’s parish, Port Moresby was filled to capacity as residents of the Catholic faith converged on Boroko yesterday.
It was a big day of celebration to mark 125 years of the daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart.
Back in 1884, 10 years after the foundation of the daughters of OLSH and at the request of Pope Leo XIII, five daughters set out from France with five missionaries of the Sacred Heart to bring the love of Jesus to the then unknown mission of Papua New Guinea.
They arrived on August 1, 1887, on Yule Island, in the Kairuku area of Central, to join the missionaries of the Sacred Heart in PNG.
The day’s service, which marked the third Sunday of Advent, heard readings from Isaiah 61(verses one and two, 10 to 11), 1 Thessalonians chapter five (verses 16 to 24 and John chapter 1 (verses six to eight, 19 to 28).
The church heard that John baptised and proclaimed the imminent coming of the Messiah.
He declared emphatically that he was not the Christ; he was the light showing the way.
“John is led by the spirit to prepare the minds and hearts of the people so that they will recognise Christ when He comes. This advent may we have open hearts open minds to see Christ and give him welcome,” the church heard.
