PEOPLE in East Sepik have been warned of the danger of using spear-guns after surgeons at Wewak General Hospital saved the life of young man who was shot in the chest on Monday.
Wewak General Hospital chief executive officer Dr Lawrence Warangi said the young man, Isaac John, of West New Britain and Karasau Island parentage, was shot in the chest with a spear.
Only swift action by his surgical staff to remove the spear saved John.
Warangi, who is the chief surgeon at the hospital, praised anaesthetist Dr Lawrence Sogoromo, who was on leave in his Saure Village, for responding quickly to help him perform the emergency operation.
He warned islanders and costal people to be careful when handling a spear gun as it was a deadly weapon.
Police could not be reached for comments yesterday but sources said John was accidentally shot by another man.
