FOUR additional sports – cricket, taekwondo, kickboxing and softball – will be introduced at the 4th PNG Games in Port Moresby.
The event is expected to kick off next Thursday.
Host Organising Committee member Kila Dick said these sports would be played for the first time at the games.
The introduction of these sports has also seen an increase in the number of athletes at the event.
It is understood that NCD, Morobe, Kimbe, Milne Bay and Central would have teams competing in cricket.
NCD has already announced a tough side for taekwondo to take on the visiting centres of New Ireland, Eastern and Western Highlands, Gulf and Central.
It will be a battle of the hidden talents in the kickboxing with teams from Highlands region expected to perform exceptionally well.
Softball has attracted teams from the East New Britain, New Ireland, NCD and current champions Lae.
Dick told The National in an interview yesterday that of 2,000 city residents had volunteered to assist officials during the games over a two-week period.
Organisers held an orientation yesterday to brief volunteers of their tasks and responsibilities.
They will be working as marshals in providing assistance and security at the event.
