Nangoi tells parents to be responsible for their children

SUMKAR MP and Correctional Service Minister Chris Yer Nangoi has told parents in the district to be committed to their children’s learning and upbringing and not to depend entirely on teachers.
Speaking at the 49th Grade 10, 11 and 12 graduation ceremony for Karkar Secondary School in Madang on Sunday, Nangoi told parents not to expect teachers to do all the work but be involved with their children.
He shared his experience as a dropout of the formal education system who succeeded through perseverance and commitment.
Nangoi presented a new truck purchased by the district development authority to the school to address transport issues.
School principal Annie Dorea acknowledged the district’s support and also highlighted the school’s need to have more teaching staff as well as housing to accommodate teachers.
Dorea said the school had water problems for years and would like to see improvement.
She also appealed to former students of Karkar Secondary to assist the school to build its new e-learning library to commemorate its 50th anniversary next year.
Nangoi assured the principle that he would work with the school to address some of the issues.
Meanwhile, Information, Communication and Technology Minister Timothy Masiu, also invited to the event, committed K50,000 to the school to help set up the library and will be instructing his team to travel to the school to help.
Masiu also pledged to build a double classroom at Miok Primary School, of which he was a former student.
Karkar Secondary had graduated more than 1,000 grade 10 and 12 students this year.
