TWENTY teams in Mt Hagen have registered to compete in a three-month volleyball competition which is offering K15,000 in prize money.
The competition, sponsored by Muri Trading, was launched at Kamuk village outside Mt Hagen on Sunday. It ends in February.
The teams are made up of Komkui, Solo and city youths.
Muri Trading owner Elijah Tiki said he was sponsoring the competition to promote unity and peace within the community.
He said it would bring together young people from Warakum and Tarangau in the city and locals from the Komkui and Solo areas and promote development.
“It won’t do me any good if the community that I come from is made up of drug addicts or is known for firearms build-up,” Tiki said.
He said firearms build-up was a serious law and order which need to be addressed using initiatives such as sports.
Tiki said his vision was to change young people’s attitude.
“My aim is to create a safe and a better community, this is why I need the youths,” he said.
“I’m appealing to the 20 teams to make this competition a success, so that we can all make some positive changes in the community.”
