PAPUA New Guinea Kumuls playmaker Watson Boas is looking forward to strong season in England is tier-three rugby league competition after signing a two-year deal with Doncaster.
The 25-year-old was initially signed on a one-year deal with tier-two oufit Featherstone Rovers last year.
But midway through the season, he was sent on loan to Doncaster after falling down the pecking order at Featherstone.
After some impressive performances with Doncaster, club chairman Carl Hall has extended Boas’ contract.
Boas was initially disappointed when he was sent to the tier-three competition, but started to take his loan spell in his stride as the matches went by.
Boas said he needed to be patient while plying his trade in the United Kingdom.
“I played the last test match against Great Britain Lions for two good reasons,” Boas said.
“My first reason was to play for the country and second was to prove them wrong for underestimating my potential with the Featherstone Rovers.
“That’s why I gave my best and eventually we came out victorious (28-10).”
When The National asked the former SP Hunter how he was adjusting to life in the UK, he said: “The environment is still new to me.
“At first, I was homesick but as time went by, I got myself busy with training. When I go back, it will be normal. But there are times when I’m homesick.”
Boas said he was always passionate about representing his country.

  • He is an NRL material but Australians are always underestimating PNG players and that is what keeps him and other Hunters players our of NRL. NRL favours other Pacific Island countries over PNG. They can be our friends but beneath the skill, we are not, someone needs to tell NRL stop playing your biased games and start giving opportunity to PNG boys. That is just my observation

    • TO get into NRL, its the attitude both on and off the field. And mind you, spectators attitudes also plays big part in PNG players securing contracts in NRL. Yes, you can say you have lots of talented players and yet see the number of players you have in NRL teams compared to the pacific islanders, where is the gap? It comes down to attitude. AND it counts a lot mate. I wont want my Aussie teams to field a PNG player with attitude problems back where he comes from.
