RAMU NiCo spent more than K3 million outside the project agreement commitments on community assistance and donations in the past 10 years.
Community affairs deputy general manager Albert Tobe said all commitments under agreement had been completed.
The company provided extra assistance and donation.
“The company provided equipment and construction materials to assist provincial works in the reconstruction of Miyai Bridge along the Madang-Ramu Highway,” he said.
“The company donated K30,000 to the Madang provincial team to the PNG National Games in Kimbe.”
Tobe said the company also provided gravel and equipment to mend a damaged section of the Madang-Ramu Highway.
He said the company also facilitated free medical checks to villagers near the Basamuk Refinery.
Tobe said more than K30 million was invested on infrastructure development between 2006 and 2018.
“Up to 2006, the people of Kurumbukari and nearby villages used to cross the Ramu River by canoe and walk about 20 kilometres to Usino station to catch a PMV to Madang town,” he said.
“Today they are travelling in (vehicles) – thanks to the K19 million Ramu NiCo Bridge.”
Tobe said Ramu NiCo also established elementary schools in project-impacted villages.

  • Were the K30 millions part of a Tax Credit scheme that amounts to tax liability reduction for the company?
