Proper rubbish disposal can save K3mil: MP

DISPOSING rubbish properly in bins provided in public areas can save K3 million yearly to build needed infrastructures in water, electricity and feeder roads in Lae city settlements, Lae MP John Rosso says.
Rosso said the Lae City Authority (LCA) in the last two years had spent K6 million on machinery and equipment to keep the city clean.
“If citizens take ownership to dispose of rubbish and betel nut spittle in provided bins we can save K3mil annually that can be utilised meaningfully in other infrastructural development activities,” he said.
“Lae citizens need an attitude and mindset change beginning in family homes.”
Rosso said Lae was a multi-cultural city strategically located in the heart of the country that experienced the effects of urban drift and population increase.
He said the K10 million district services improvement programme funds (DSIP) could not cater for the growing city and its needs with the expansion of the Lae-Nadzab urban development plan which caters for Situm, Gabensis and three Labu villages.
“Lae needs K100mil to provide for its citizens’ needs compared to National Capital District which receives K500mil of which K600mil is generated from Lae alone through (GST) goods and services taxes,” he said.
Rosso said in 2018, Governor Ginson Saonu assisted with K10mil and again with K6mil this year to fix feeder roads and improve city’s image.
He commended Lae police for their perseverance which had resulted in a decline in major crimes.
