Teachers ready for work

IT’S back to school time and the 39 teachers of Hoskins Secondary School in West New Britain are ready for the new academic year.
Teacher Eugene Kua said the school had vacancies for three more.
“The teachers are excited and at the same time hopeful (that it will be) a successful year in terms
of achieving good results,” Kua said.
“We are aiming to do better this year. Last year’s results were good but we could have done better than that.
“We showed that we are capable of producing good results, so we are looking forward to (improving on) last year’s results.”
Half of those in Grade 10 last year are moving on to Grade 11 with 18 eligible for spots at a school of excellence around the nation.
Hoskins Secondary has 24 classes – seven in grades nine and 10, and five in grades 11 and 12. There are 1,200 students.
“Hoskins Secondary is one of the two schools to adopt the secondary system and over the years has fared well against established national high schools,” he said.
Kua is looking forward to meeting his students.
“My focus this year will be to firstly develop a better relationship with students in terms of teaching and learning, and to improve some teaching methods to accommodate their needs,” he said.
Kua urged parents to work with the school administration, and students to understand the importance of education.
“The oil palm blocks and parents’ purse will one day be exhausted. What you learn and live through education will (decide) your future,” he said.
