Morobe allocates K8mil for Gerson-Solulu scholarship scheme

THE Morobe government has allocated K8 million for its annual Gerson-Solulu scholarship scheme.
It is K500,000 less than last year’s K8.5 million allocation to cater for tertiary students of Morobe attending 31 higher institutions around the country.
Markham MP Koni Iguan during the Tutumang budget meeting on Monday called for the list of students under the scheme to be made available to districts and local level governments (LLG).
He said it was to prevent irregularities in the process of getting the scholarship.
Iguan said the scholarship was originally created for students from the rural areas of Morobe attending tertiary institutions around the country.
“If the list of students are made available to districts which students originate from, this could help in identifying them so that they could also benefit from the district or LLG,” Iguan said.
“Some districts and LLGs may have their own scholarship schemes to help their students.”
He said there had been cases of students “double dipping” in the past, resulting in some other students missing out on the scholarship.
Attempts to get a comment from the Morobe Tertiary Student Union president Jordan Joachim were unsuccessful.
