FIRST-year students at the University of PNG were yesterday reminded that the university environment was “a far cry” from what they experienced in school.
Chancellor Robert Igara in welcoming them yesterday said they should be committed to their studies to achieve their goals.
“University life is a far cry from your high school days.
“A university is an environment that promotes freedom of expression and thought,” he said.
“(It) also opens unlimited career opportunities that will enable you to contribute to the public and private sectors.”
Igara said the delivery of excellent education and research results by university staff and the commitment by students would lead to positive nation building.
“We want to ensure that PNG is a major contributor to national, regional, and global advancement and development in an innovative, digital economy and appropriate empowered society.”
He encourage them to use the university’s resources such as the information and communication facility, the Michael Somare library, and the experience of the university staff.
Vice-chancellor, Prof Frank Griffin stressed the importance of a university and told the students to be mindful of their behaviour.
“It is a place where you will learn to behave in appropriate thoughtful ways and to accept the responsibility for the outcome of your behaviours,” he said.
