NRL Nines
Only 10,128 turned up at the NBF Park in Perth on Day One of the 2020 NRL Nines last weekend, and 14,739 on Day Two. In contrast, more than 35,000 were watching a women’s AFL match between West Coast and Fremantle at Optus Stadium. Unfair.
No try
This was the last-minute “try” that NRL top referee Ben Cummins awarded to Dragons rookie Cody Ramsey who had leapt over the Panthers’ defender to plant the ball in the corner. Replays confirmed the ball touched the grass well outside the line. There was no video technology used during the NRL Nines last weekend, so the try was counted. The Dragons reached the final.
Rugby treat
Rugby league fans are in for a treat this weekend with the SP Hunters up against Capras and the Sharks versus the Bulldogs at Boroko’s National Football Stadium. It’s less than three days to go to the year’s first major footy.
High tackle
From a reader: Why are tackles above the shoulder treated as a “major crime” in rugby union but let off by referees and NRL bosses in rugby league?
Cyclone warning
We should be looking south this week to watch weather development from that direction. A cyclone forming in the gulf may head up this way.
Warning to drivers
From a reader: Drivers should not leave bottles of water or objects on the floor near the brake pedal as they can roll under it rendering it useless when you try to stop the vehicle. It has led to many road accidents.
