MORE than 1,500 secondary school students in Markham Valley have been told to know their rights as consumers and to live healthy lives by consuming healthy food during the World Consumer Rights Day.
They were told to be aware of what they were putting into their bodies by checking the labels and expiry dates of goods sold in stores.
World Consumer’s Rights Day falls on March 15 and a team of officials from the Independent Consumer and Competition Commission (ICCC), Papua New Guinea Customs Agency (PNGCA), Department of Industry, Trade and Labour with the Fresh Produce Development Agency paid a visit to Markham Valley Secondary School on Monday.
ICCC investigation officer Allen Monyomb told the students that as consumers they had rights, one of which was to consume healthy food and have access to services.
“Products that are sold to us like store goods and others like services, which are not physical, such as public motor vehicle (PMV) bus services or airplane or standing in a queue at the bank,” Monyomb said.
He said consumers paid for products and expected to be getting quality and safe products and not counterfeit goods and others that were overdue, expired or low quality items.
