Be the change

Letters

MAHATMA Gandhi, one of the greatest political leader once said, “be the change you wish to see in this world”.
What he meant was, if you are not happy with the way this world is going, you should not just sit and complain about it, you yourself should be the change.
Today in Papua New Guinea, people whine about little things from food, clothes, relationship and what not. People complain about the government and corruption every single day.
One would say: “If I become the PM I will root out corruption completely”.
Well that may not happen as you have a low probability.
So how can one change the world?
In every situation there is two sides to it.
People tend to look at the world in what I call the hard way without realising that there is also an “easy way”.
For instance, everyone thinks that in order to eradicate corruption is to become the PM.
Well that’s rather not true.
By looking at preceding governments from day one till now, no PM has uprooted corruption in its entirety.
Though they preached that they will, it has come to no avail.
The problem lies with each individual, so as the solution.
Individual citizens should start implementing measures against corruption in their own little ways.
If you are someone who give K2 to your kids in order for them to stop crying, or someone who favours some individuals over others because you know them, than you are no different to those whom you complained about.
In other words, you are crying over someone else’s spilled milk while yours is also spilled; meaning all along you are practising corruption while complaining about corruption.
The easy way is to change your behavior and conduct yourself in the way you want other people to.
If you change and everybody change, than the change will make the change you wish to see in this world.

  • Well said. Thank you for the insight. We need to have this kind of mindset. It is all about being honest with ourselves. When we talk about intergrity, what are we really talking about? Intergrity means being honest at all times, even when no one is watching. We can eradicate corruption, if we deal honestly at all times.
