A CHURCH head says he totally agrees with and supports the idea of having an internet filtering system.
Responding to an article in The National on Monday about the Censorship Office calling for an internet filtering system, Evangelical Lutheran church head bishop Rev Dr Jack Urame said technology was beneficial and served a good purpose but the human tendency of misusing but abusing technology for self-gratification was increasing.
“The result, as we have seen today, is destructive,” he said.
“We have seen new trends of social behaviour which is completely out of our social moral standards, cultural values and Biblical principles.
“Unfiltered internet excess opens up greater possibility for anyone to excess information which can be destructive.
“Excessing information on internet is by choice but the choices must be controlled through a filtering system.
“When it is not controlled, a lot of damage is done to our society.
“We are already in danger of losing the moral values of our society and if we ignore this danger it will destroy not only the present generation but also the future generation.
“Once we lose the goodness of our society, we will have a nation with moral decay.
“Therefore, necessary action must be taken to control the use of internet in order to protect our country and our people.”
Rev Urame said everyone should be conscious that being exposed to undesired aspects would only destroying oneself and the community.
“We must live by example and not allow the ideology of human freedom to destroy our society, he said.
“Human right is good and we must protect and promote it but if freedom does not contribute to the good of humanity and society it is ethically bad.”

  • This is a good call by Evangelical Lutheran church head bishop Rev Dr Jack Urame to have the internet filtering system in place in Papua New Guinea and the government should 100% support on this proposal. We all good citizens of this beautiful nation of Papua New Guinea agree on this proposal.

  • The bishop should be preaching hard against sin to his congregation instead of going to the media. He should also pray and stop wasting time going public

    • I disagree Sebastian. Many PNG people’s minds have not developed with the technology. There a lot of confused people (especially young ones) who do not understand and cannot decide what is good and what is bad for them. We need to help them make the right choices in life. Otherwise we become a nation full of disorientated people who will think destructive attitude/behavior is normal.

    • Well said Sebastian. The bishop should be talking about a spiritual solution to the problem of ethical and moral decay due to phonography access. Tell the congregation not to allow the devil to use them because they are the tools and vessels of God.

  • 100% right I support it. Sebastian you are wrong, you can preach the word but also you must control the environment around you which can easily influence the downfall of your faith.
