In court over bribery

A 30-YEAR-OLD woman will stand trial in the National Court for allegedly attempting to bribe a police officer to destroy her boyfriend’s court files.
Goroka Committal Court Magistrate Frank Manue told the accused, Rose Tom, from Keta village in Unggai-Bena district, Eastern Highlands, that the court had found sufficient evidence to commit her case to trial.
Tom was charged with one count of attempted bribery where she offered K100 to police officer Joylyn Yariyari to destroy her boyfriend’s court file as he (boyfriend) was facing a misappropriation charge.
The accused approached officer Yariyari, who was her boyfriend’s arresting officer, at Lopi in Goroka and enquired about her boyfriend’s charges.
After a brief update by the officer, Tom offered her K100 to destroy the court files.
Yariyari told Tom to come to the police station the following day and referred her to a Criminal Investigation Division (CID) officer.
Tom also offered the CID officer money to destroy her boyfriend’s court files at which time she was arrested under section 103 (a) of the PNG Criminal Code Act, chapter 262.

  • This explains why so many cases are thrown out by courts due to lack of evidence or police file not ready simply because of people like this dog by the name of Rose Tom.
This honest police officer would be my choice of Police Commissioner if I was in-charge of PNG.
Such honesty should be publicly acknowledged by hierarchy.
