THE Koki Basketball League hosted its finals at South Fitness Centre in Port Moresby on Sunday, with 10 teams sharing a total K20,000 in prize monies.
League assistant chairman Terrence Rai told The National that the venue catered for basketball and netball competitions while addressing social issues among Koki youths.
Following the finals, the top-three sides were awarded a total of K8,000 while the other seven teams received K500 each.
“Since we don’t have access to our own courts, we’ve been having on-and-off competitions since 2014 but we are settled now,” Rai said.
“We have 10 teams from Koki and Wanigela.
“We stopped our competitions for some months because of the Covid-19 situation in the city and we also had a reported case here so we were hesitant to restart straight away but we managed to do so.
“The games were intended for young people because we’ve realised that a lot of social issues relating to drugs, alcohol and theft were becoming common and this is one way we can change their attitude.”
