MADANG police arrested seven suspected drug traffickers at a checkpoint on the highway on Wednesday morning.
“The suspects were travelling down from the Highlands with more than 5kg of marijuana to be sold on the streets in Madang,” Madang commander Supt Mazuc Rubiang said.
He said drug smuggling by youths and other passengers from the Highlands was an ongoing illegal activity.
“That was the reason why police set up the checkpoint – to inspect vehicles and passengers,” he said.
Supt Rubiang also urged the public to also help provide information to the police to check such illegal activities.
He said many youths had become marijuana addicts and were causing social problems, with some even having health (mental) issues.
“Reporting drug smugglers, drug dealers and the addicts will
help ease the social problems related to marijuana consumption,” he said.
“We must all work together to stop drug addiction.”
Supt Rubiang said police on crime prevention foot patrols in Madang town had also been arresting marijuana pedlars.
“Those arrested will be charged under the Dangerous Drug Act and will be detained in a police lock-up until they appear in court,” he said.
