Implement Vagrancy Act

Letters

PORT Moresby is the largest city in the South Pacific with an increasing number of people as well as businesses.
It (the city) has to be a secure place for investors to invest and live in without any fear for loss of business or from criminals.
However, from social and mainstream media, Port Moresby appears to be another Afghanistan or Syria in the Pacific with the front page of newspapers filled with unnecessary stories about killings and other negative stories.
The media should put up something positive for once.
Port Moresby is one of the most confusing cities in the world.
It is poorly designed and is surrounded with settlements that are full of rascals and homebrew producers and consumers in the settlements.
The Government’s plan of implementing the Vagrancy Act is the way forward.
It will force some of the uncivilised people to return to their home provinces.
I support the Act because it will chase away people who continuously cause problems for everyone.
I’ve been to many cities, especially in our neighbouring Pacific Island countries, and I’ve never come across a city full of settlements.
It’s so sad that we even named our city “Amazing Port Moresby”when there is no infrastructure development?
The almost 1 million city residents are from different classes.
About 1 per cent of the population are foreigners and about 80 per cent are unemployed and uneducated.
The unemployed are the ones that are causing chaos in the city.
Some resort to causing violence because they don’t know better.
These people continue to live in the nation’s capital because the National Capital District Commission gives them land to live on.
Some are also given free water and electricity.
Life is so easy for them that’s why they cause problems every day.
The city is full of murderers and criminals.
The settlements are the breeding grounds for criminals.
Places such as Kone, Talai, Morata, 8-Mile, ATS and 9-Mile should be developed into suburbs.
These places could be commercialised.
They contribute to the development of the city and improve living conditions.
I think settlements should be far from the city.
Port Moresby’s MPs are the ones contributing to the slow development and prosperity because they are the ones that allow people from all over the country to come live in the nation’s capital.
These people are now starting to grab land from the National Capital District Commission and the people of Central.
Some of them don’t contribute to anything positive.
They only maintain their uncivilised attitudes and tribalism.
Port Moresby’s MPs are giving free land to settlers just so they can win votes and remain in power.
I believe this is why our capital is regarded as unsuitable for investors and tourists.
Our MPs in the National Capital District need to tell the country how much the people in settlements pay the Government to acquire land titles.
It is the responsibility of the National Capital District Commission to get rid of all those illegal settlers by reviewing their land titles and turn those settlements into suburbs and commercial areas.
I think National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop and other Port Moresby MPs should work together to remove those who continue to cause problems.
Send them back to their provinces.
Invite decent investors from around the world and the country to settle here.
Let’s make Port Moresby the home of the civilised.

Maccabi Kentipa,
Port Moresby

  • Towns and cities should be for the working population only. Why can’t the Vagrancy Act be implemented?
