Marape welcomes consensus to amend laws

PRIME Minister James Marape has welcomed the “bipartisan” approval in Parliament to six amended legislations, saying outdated laws needed to be changed.
The six are the:

  • MOTOR Vehicles (Third Party Insurance) (Amendment) Bill 2021;
  • MOTOR Vehicles (Third Party Insurance) (Basic Protection Compensation) (Amendment) Bill (Chapter 296);
  • KUMUL Consolidated Holdings Authorisation (Amendment) Bill 2021;
  • PUBLIC Services (Management) (Amendment) Bill 2021;
  • MEDICAL Registration (Amendment) Bill 2021; and
  • OIL and Gas (Papua Liquefied Natural Gas Project) (Amendment) Bill 2021.

Marape said outdated laws did not serve the interests of the people.
“The passage of the six important bills, which will have a lasting impact on our country, clearly shows that my Government is functioning,” Marape said.
“I indicated, when I took office in May 2019, of reforms to existing laws which are now in motion.
“I thank members of the Opposition for their bipartisan support in most cases.”
The Government last Wednesday allowed the live broadcast and telecast of parliamentary proceedings.
Marape thanked State Enterprises Minister William Duma, Public Service Minister Joe Sungi, Health Minister Jelta Wong and Petroleum Minister Kerenga Kua for tabling the bills and the MPs from both sides for supporting them.
