MORESBY North-East will not complete its National Capital District Schools Rugby League season due to no teacher support and player registration fees, according to an official.
League president Arnold Gende told The National yesterday that it was disappointing to end their season without completing the finals.
He urged teachers of participating Moresby North-East schools to improve next season.
“It’s disappointing because I see that there are students with potential in the Moresby North-East schools,” Gende said.
“The interest shown by students is overwhelming.
“They are passionate about rugby league. The problem with them is that most of their players in all schools didn’t pay their registration fees.
“It’s sad to see that but I think they need support from parents and sponsors.
“Another issue is that most of the schools in that zone don’t have teachers to support them in the league.
“They don’t have patrons or teachers who can coordinate and organise them in the league, and that is a concern.
“We can’t run this competition without their support and my appeal to them is to improve in those areas next season.”
Gende said the league would continue to make progress every year.
He said the league would contribute to improving the game in the country. “Teachers and parents must show support if their students and children show interest in sports, including rugby league,” Gende said.
“Five to 10 years down the line, we will see the end result of this programme.”
Gende said the programme was important for the growth of rugby league.
