A POLICEMAN is dead and a fellow female officer is fighting for her life at the Port Moresby General Hospital after their vehicle crashed at Doru, along Pari Road in Port Moresby yesterday.
Eyewitnesses said a 10-seater police vehicle from the Kerema police station was returning from Pari village when it overturned and crashed.
Empty beer cans were reportedly found in the vehicle.
This is the second nasty road accident in the capital after six people, including a senior university lecturer, died in an accident on Baruni Road a few weeks back.
A witness, Robito Paulus, said there were five people on board the vehicle when the accident happened.
National Capital District police operations chief Andy Bawa confirmed the accident.
“I don’t know what they were doing in Pari,” Bawa said.
He said the deceased was a young constable.
He was sitting on the off side when the driver lost control of the vehicle.
Eyewitnesses suggested he might not have been wearing a seat belt when the accident occured.
The accident occured between 5am and 6am.
The police vehicle was returning from Pari village after reportedly dropping off a policeman from the highlands who was married to a Pari woman.
“NCD traffic is investigating the matter,” Bawa said.
“I will release full details once I have received further information from the investigating officers.”
The vehicle involved was donated by Gulf Governor Havila Kavo.
