PNG leaders must practise prudent management
The Nationl, Monday 10th September, 2012
PNG has been experiencing exponential economic growth for almost a decade.
But there is no tangible development to be seen because of several contributing factors.
Firstly, expenditure needs to be controlled.
Government spending must be within the budget and spent on priority areas, even though we have a surplus.
The Finance and Treasury departments must not entertain or allow reckless spending outside the budget.
Secondly, there is ineffective capacity and capability to implement and monitor development policies such as Vision 2050.
Good policies have been developed but nothing has materialised.
The corrupt political influence in the daily operations of state entities is another reason why economic growth has no impact on the people’s living standard.
This is the result of political appointments of departmental heads, CEOs and MDs.
Some CEOs jump from one department to another while recycled MDs and secretaries run down one organisation after another.
They are a hindrance to PNG’s progress and development.
We need to appoint young CEOs and let the old ones retire.
PNG needs good managers.
There is widespread mismanagement and, as a result, corruption takes place.
Finally, there is the unequal distribution of wealth.
Only 10% of the population enjoy 90% of the benefits from our resources.
The gap between the rich and the poor is widening with the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer.
