COMMUNITY based mentoring is becoming the preferred mode of delivery of information and services on sexual reproductive health and family planning, an official says.
Family health services coordinator with the Lae district health services Sr Lina Kusak said during a two-day training workshop for 15 community-based mentors to up-skill them to provide more advocacy.
The workshop, which was conducted by Marie Stopes PNG, involved mentors working for or with the Morobe Provincial Health Authority, the Catholic Health Agency, Bulolo District Health Services and Lae District Health Services who were being trained on the referral pathways that were available in Morobe to provide better advocacy and awareness.
Kusak thanked Marie Stopes PNG for conducting the training and said there was a need for more statistics on sexual reproductive health.
She said family and sexual reproductive health statistics in Morobe was increasing but there was little data being captured in reports and limited awareness on the issue, especially in Lae district.
Kusak said Lae is a multi-cultural district and therefore will need accurate data to provide advocacy and awareness.
Kusak challenged service providers and clinicians to ensure statistics and reports were available to the district and provincial health authorities.
