Land secured for police post in NIP village

THE Sor-Waipap clan of Kumim village in Namatanai, New Ireland, have issued a piece of customary land to build a police post, clan representative Judah Pais says.
Pais confirmed this after New Guinea Islands divisional commander Assistant Commissioner of Police Perou N’dranou and provincial commander Chief Inspector Felix Nebanat visited the site.
“Since the road access to Namatanai worsened, law and order also deteriorated, including unreported cases of sea piracy, murder, rape, arson and more,” he said.
“However, when the logging activities came in with police deployment, we saw a decrease of crimes in our communities.”
Pais said the event signified the beginning of a new legacy, giving the people hope for peace restoration.
In response to the locals gesture, N’dranou acknowledged the clan elders for their initiative.
He said the establishment of the police post, its general operation and maintenance should be drawn to ensure proper planning while implementation of the project must be done according to police’s due process and protocol.
The ACP highlighted the importance of having the police post established outside of the logging company’s area, to maintain transparency and neutralism.
In addition, Namatanai administrator Neville Tomon pledged his support to support the project under funding of the Namatanai development authority.
