BC Cats scored two late intercept tries to sink Crossroad Steelers 4-2 in the Huon Touch Association men’s grand final in Lae on Sunday.
Cats capitalised on basic errors by Steelers to break the 2-2 stalemate late in the match while 10-Mile’s Bubia Hogs beat Salamanda and Bulae Jets sunk Ume Stones to claim the Bowl and Plate respectively.
In the mixed division, Stones beat Hogs, Jets sunk Salamanda and Cats defeated Steelers to claim the Bowl, Plate and Cup respectively.
President Sydney Peter told
The National that since establishing the competition in 2014, his association had stuck with six clubs to ensure that it was manageable.
He said Stones, Hogs, Steelers, Cats, Salamanda and Jets kicked off the season in June.
“We have been running the competition with just two divisions,” Peter said.
He said the association had not received any financial support from corporate houses or MPs despite requests.
“We have been running the competition with our own resources through fundraising as well as player and team registrations,” Peter said.
“So we do not give out cash prizes at the end of our finals.
“If we do, everyone will be expecting something from the association.
“Only on two occasions, we did give out cash prizes as the association was able to make enough money through fundraising.”
He appealed to resident and business houses to support the association as most of the players were from settlements.
“We’re a family-oriented competition,” Peter said.
“Any assistance will be able to help youths compete in the sport and refrain from bad activities.”
Meanwhile, he said the association would kick off corporate mixed matches in two weeks’ time.
