NCD cops on full alert for opportunists

POLICE will be covering all corners of the National Capital District today leading up to New Year’s Day in their bid to maintain peace and order during the new year celebrations, and ensuring no opportunists take advantage of rumours about shutdown of Asian-owned cottage businesses.
Station commanders and section heads were informed in a meeting by NCD chief in command, Supt Fred Yakasa, to be ready as early as 4am for the operations.
Chief Supt Yakasa said police would also be focused on shopping centres, industrial areas and businesses in light of the hate email that had been brought to their notice.
He described the email as “just hot air without substance”, adding that there were proper avenues that could be used to channel to get issues heard.
Chief Supt Yakasa, however, said police were prepared and would be out in full force to ensure that peace was maintained.
He told his men in a briefing yesterday at the Boroko police station that deployment was essential in the operations.
He added that the police would also be enforcing the liquor ban imposed for today and tomorrow.
Those, who will be affected are bottle shops, dealers, taverns and public bars in hotels and publicans.
Chief Supt Yakasa in addition, commended the media for their part in this year’s reporting.
He said this year’s reported incidences had been minimal compared to other years.
He also thanked the community for their cooperation as well.
