MENDI MP De Kewanu has blamed past leaders for encouraging people to always expect handouts from them.

Kewanu urged people to change this thinking because he would not be giving them handouts.

“I don’t have money to give out to the people for putting flowers across the road when I travel around in the district or pay for those slaughtering pigs for me,” he said.

Kewanu said people thought this was right thing to do because past leaders encouraged them to do so.

He said it was a waste of public funds.

He told a group of people at Tente Primary School last Friday that whatever money given to the district was for projects to benefit everyone and not just a few individuals.

“As a man from the private sector coming into the system, I will make sure every toea is accounted for,” he said.

He will concentrate on roads, bridges and electricity supply first before looking at health, education, agriculture and other projects.

He urged people to put aside political differences and work together.
