MPs urged to use initiative

PARLIAMENTARIANS should think “outside the box” in bringing services to their people, Opposition leader Belden Namah says.

Namah, the Vanimo-Green MP, said this last Thursday when visiting the construction site of a new hydro-power facility at Bapa village in the Buang LLG of Bulolo district, Morobe.

Namah and Huon Gulf MP Ross Seymour were invited by Bulolo MP Sam Basil to witness the construction of the project.

“The government does not have answers to all our problems,” Namah said.

“It does not matter where you are. You can still deliver services. 

“Strong leadership is what this nation needs.”

Namah said he was pleased with the work his deputy (Basil) was doing in his electorate to bring services to his people. 

Basil said the hydro-power project was being developed by AG Investments Ltd for the people and his administration was only facilitating it.

He estimated the project to cost between K20 million and K30 million.

“My aim is to make Bulolo the power district of PNG,” Basil said.

“The hydro power will generate income for the people.”

The landowners will give their land and water to the developer to build the facility while the developer will put the funding.

Basil said he would ensure the landowners got a good deal out of the project and enjoyed its benefits.

The Bapa hydro-power is the third to be built in the district. Upper Baiyune and Lower Baiyune in Mumeng LLG, Bulolo, are existing hydro facilities supplying 3.5MW and 9.5MW respectively.

Basil said once the Bapa facility was completed it would supply around 7MW to the people of Buang and the neighbouring areas, including Hidden Valley and Wafi-Golpu.
